Danube University Krems (DUK)
Danube University Krems (DUK) is a university exclusively oriented toward continuing education, encompassing the needs of working professionals. The University offers master's programs in five areas of study. Serving more than 8,000 students and with 16,000 graduates from 90 countries, it is one of the leading providers of professional education courses in Europe. Danube University Krems was founded in 1994.
The Department for Migration and Globalization (DUK-MIG) focuses on migration, a critical issue of modern societies. In so doing the department wants to contribute to a better understanding of the processes at work to promote social cohesion and wellbeing. The department team covers a wide range of professional disciplines such that it may address the complexity of migration and globalization from various vantage points.
Focusing on social sustainability of the built environment the center for Social Space and Migration within the Department for Migration and Globalization has repeatedly engaged in research and teaching undertakings related to housing, neighborhood and social inclusion. This refers to national and international projects, such as participatory community processes in socially burdened residential quarters, energy poverty and adaptation to climate change for vulnerable urban groups, PV implementation in rural areas of developing countries and assessment of low cost condominiums in urban Ethiopia. In doing so, the team has frequently stated an urgent need for interdisciplinary exchange between social and design related sciences and the development of a common vocabulary of these two.
