BReUCom case studies
Rather than exerting normative power for systematic development of infrastructure and built environment, planning in the global South under the premises of climate change finds itself increasingly restricted to dragging behind real world, uncontrolled urban growth. As a consequence, the term “urban planning and design” in itself can and should be challenged and new forms of urban development for resilience should be inquired where (economic) growth does not affect social and environmental well-being.
The focus of contemporary planning and design therefore needs to be shifted towards new paradigms – those of enabling increased resilience, quality of life and wellbeing, especially in poor, underserviced and often informal urban communities. Inevitably, this demands for planning’s focus to be broadened: from purely physical and engineering approaches to those which incorporate social and developmental sciences and, most notably, include a holistic perception of an overall “informality nexus”: taking into account the essential role of informal economies not only in supplying affordable housing but, more noteworthy still, in sustaining the livelihoods of those residing there.
It is against this background that ten comparative case studies are conducted within the framework of BReUCom to support and inform the development of graduate courses and Professional Development Programs (PDP). Such location specific case studies are broadly missing in the Indian context. These case studies investigate specific questions related to urban resilience and compare conditions in India as well as, to a lesser degree, in Europe.
In close cooperation with experts from European HEIs (DUK, UTWENTE), Indian partners (KRVIA-USM, SPAV, NITH, SPAB) and Indian NGOs (SPARC, CURE) conduct these case studies.
